Northen Ponds Package - 7 Ponds Desiliting

Glasgow Contractors was awarded the contract to desilt identified stormwater ponds in the Northern area’s of Auckland in November 2022. The ponds were in the Rodney and Waitakere regions:

1. Blue Heron No 1 Stormwater Pond, Stanmore Bay

2. Blue Heron No 41 Stormwater Pond, Stanmore Bay

3. Buttercup Place Stormwater Pond, Waimauku

4. Parlane Stormwater Pond, Kumeu

5. Evelyn Stormwater Pond, Warkworth

6. Lucy Moore Memorial Park Stormwater Pond, Warkworth

7. Glenmore Stormwater Pond, Warkworth

8. Ngahau Stormwater Pond, Warkworth

Project Scope

The Northern Areas Ponds Desilting project set out to address the following issues:

• Providing increased silt storage capacity;

• Addressing odour issues;

• Improving public amenities;

• Mitigating public health and safety risks.

This project had a vision to improving Te Mana o te Wai (the health and wellbeing of water bodies and freshwater ecosystems) within the stormwater ponds and the receiving environment they discharge to.

Social and cost benefits of the ponds project include:

• Belonging and participation – a pond with, will provide greater public enjoyment within the reserve.

• Homes and places – an area where locals are proud of.

• Environmental and cultural heritage – a healthy water body provides enhancement to the environmental value of the area.

• Community involvement – identifying opportunities to improve aesthetics and amenity value which benefit the community.

• Guardianship – restoration of the reserve empowers locals to value and look after their reserves.

• Better value for ratepayers and residents - through cost-effective desilting methods and added amenities/infrastructure (planting, fencing etc.).

• Future planning – consider population growth and how it will affect the stormwater pond assets.

This Project kicked off in January 2023 and was completed by the end of July 2023, a total of 3358 tonnes of silt was removed from the ponds, additional works on the ponds included security fence installation, manhole and spillway repairs and planting.
